Magnetic Personal Brand Story #2 Lisa Middlebrook with Zahrina Robertson
Partner – Grovebrook Advisors
I have loved working in politics and public policy for over 15 years. I have worked in trade policy at Australia’s embassy in Washington D.C., worked for the Democrats in Washington, worked with both sides of politics in Australia and for several public policy consultancies. This work has required both broad and in depth knowledge of many social and economic issues facing both countries and has involved corporate relationships, government agencies as well as politicians. I’ve been lucky to find a business partner who has complimentary skills and we work together to provide consulting and advice to corporate and government clients and politicians. I’m pleased our business keeps growing and we are working on more diverse projects, including infrastructure projects and urban planning.
How did you find the courage/motivation to embark on the path of doing what you’re doing as a dynamic entrepreneur?
There is nothing like a major life change to set you up and sort you out. When I became a mother, my schedule had to change. I needed a way to continue in a field that I love while working in a new and more flexible way. It’s not easy and it does take time, effort and yes courage, but it’s well worth the effort when it begins to pay off.
What are your top two strategies for promoting your personal brand to help your business?
Personal branding is helping me leverage my very unique background into real business opportunities.
Potential business partners can gain an immediate connection with me and when combined with my background, they then want to know more about what I do and how we can work together. I have found that many people find my background interesting but then need to know more about how we can work together. A plan for personal branding can help explain who you are and what you can do.
How has personal branding helped you to achieve your business goals?
I work at the nexus between corporate interests, government, public policy and politics. An awareness of personal branding has helped me put forth my ideas in a very image conscience environment.
From your experience, what advice would you provide to other entrepreneurs on personal branding?
This is the future. Increasingly companies are taking on more consultants, short-term contract employees, and project managers who will work for limited time frames. The person who can promote themselves well in this context will be a step ahead of the pack. Personal branding can help you achieve this.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m not sure what the future holds, does anyone? I have a few key steps and plans in mind to help grow things in the next two years, and then we’ll go from there. I just want to make sure I remain flexible and adaptable to whatever comes along.
